Quickest solution for aspx/ascx was to delete the designer file, right click the aspx/ascx file and click "Convert to Web Application".This will recreate the designer and will place the declartion of all the controls. that's a nice work-around, and interestingly, it also changes the runtime version from 2.0.50727.42 to 2.0.50727.1433 ( presuming, of course, that it was 2.0.50727.42 to begin with ) Here is something interesting guys...We always have a problem that not updating automatically when we add new controls in markup or the designer, and if we want to get it in code behind, it doesn’t show up.

under this button click event, I want to change the text property of label like: lbl Confirmation.
Text = "Confirmation is OK"; but it did not change the text.
After several hours of swearing, testing, trying things out, and more swearing I happened upon the answer... Within the Button Field tags, I had left the "Button Type" property set to "Link Button".
This is a valid value in a Data Grid, but not in a Grid View.
For reference I am using Visual Studio 2008 on a C# . I was in the middle of converting a Data Grid object to a Grid View.
